Facial Analysis

Last Thursday in Orthodontics we learned how to make a facial analysis. For next day, each student has to bring two pictures, a frontal one and a profile one. So I decided to analyse it.
We all are asymmetric. In our culture, the beauty is in the symmetric faces. A lot of actors and actress are considered beautiful and handsome because they are very symmetric.

Let's analyse my profile!

Frontal analysis in Orthodontics

The first picture is a frontal picture with 6 red lines and one yellow. The bigest one, in the middle, is the Midline. The Midline goes from the glabella(between the eyebrows) and the Subnasal (under the nose). This line has to cross the lips by the philtrum and also the chin.
How do we analyse that? If we found something that in one side is more to the left or to the right than the other side we will say, for example: There is an horizontal asymmetry to the left. In my case I think that everything is aligned.
The other 6 red lines, thinners, are the fifths. The central fifth is between the edges of the eye, called the intercanthal space. The lateral fifth is determined until the end of the eye. The space between the eyes has to be the same size as an eye. And finally the external fifth is determined by the end of the ears.

This other picture is the study of the horizontal plane. the yellow lines are:
- Bipupilar line
- Bizygomatic line
- Biaricular line
- Bicomisural line
- Bigoniac line
How do we analyse in this case? f we found something that in one side is upper then the other side we will say, for example in my case: There is an vertical asymmetry to the right. In my case I think that the left eye is upper then the right one.
The 3 oranges lines are the thirds. The first third is from the beginning of the hair until the glabella. The second third is from the glabella to the subnasal and the inferior third is until the chin. in my case the inferior part is a little bit larger than the others. The inferior third can be devided by 3 parts. In the picture you can see the yellow lines. Between the subnasal until the upper lip there is 20mm, between my lips I found 1mm and the last portion measures 45mm. The lower part has a proportion of 1:2,2. So that means for example in my case: 20 x 2,2 = 44mm. In my case is pretty symmetric.

The profile analysis

The angle of the profile is measured by 3 points. The first point is the glabella, then the second one is the subnasal and the las one is the pogonion. If the angle is between 165 to 175º is called a convex profile. If it was 180º the profile will be straight and if is more than 180º the profile will be concave.
Then we can also analyse the nasal projection; if the nose is bigger or smaller than normal.
The blue line with the numbers has a normal proportion: +2, 0 and -4. In my case is +1, -1 and -4.
Finally we have some other blue lines the curves; lowers lips curves, cheekbones curves and the mandibular line.

That's all for today. Next day I'm gonna study the smile.
