Facial Analysis

Last Thursday in Orthodontics we learned how to make a facial analysis. For next day, each student has to bring two pictures, a frontal one and a profile one. So I decided to analyse it.
We all are asymmetric. In our culture, the beauty is in the symmetric faces. A lot of actors and actress are considered beautiful and handsome because they are very symmetric.

Let's analyse my profile!

Frontal analysis in Orthodontics

The first picture is a frontal picture with 6 red lines and one yellow. The bigest one, in the middle, is the Midline. The Midline goes from the glabella(between the eyebrows) and the Subnasal (under the nose). This line has to cross the lips by the philtrum and also the chin.
How do we analyse that? If we found something that in one side is more to the left or to the right than the other side we will say, for example: There is an horizontal asymmetry to the left. In my case I think that everything is aligned.
The other 6 red lines, thinners, are the fifths. The central fifth is between the edges of the eye, called the intercanthal space. The lateral fifth is determined until the end of the eye. The space between the eyes has to be the same size as an eye. And finally the external fifth is determined by the end of the ears.

This other picture is the study of the horizontal plane. the yellow lines are:
- Bipupilar line
- Bizygomatic line
- Biaricular line
- Bicomisural line
- Bigoniac line
How do we analyse in this case? f we found something that in one side is upper then the other side we will say, for example in my case: There is an vertical asymmetry to the right. In my case I think that the left eye is upper then the right one.
The 3 oranges lines are the thirds. The first third is from the beginning of the hair until the glabella. The second third is from the glabella to the subnasal and the inferior third is until the chin. in my case the inferior part is a little bit larger than the others. The inferior third can be devided by 3 parts. In the picture you can see the yellow lines. Between the subnasal until the upper lip there is 20mm, between my lips I found 1mm and the last portion measures 45mm. The lower part has a proportion of 1:2,2. So that means for example in my case: 20 x 2,2 = 44mm. In my case is pretty symmetric.

The profile analysis

The angle of the profile is measured by 3 points. The first point is the glabella, then the second one is the subnasal and the las one is the pogonion. If the angle is between 165 to 175º is called a convex profile. If it was 180º the profile will be straight and if is more than 180º the profile will be concave.
Then we can also analyse the nasal projection; if the nose is bigger or smaller than normal.
The blue line with the numbers has a normal proportion: +2, 0 and -4. In my case is +1, -1 and -4.
Finally we have some other blue lines the curves; lowers lips curves, cheekbones curves and the mandibular line.

That's all for today. Next day I'm gonna study the smile.

First day

Hello,
Today was the first day at class. We did 3 hours of endodoncy and I got my uniform for this year. I wasn't expected to get it the first day but here it is:

And here is my surgery hat. My dad bought it at the MALO CLINIC in Portugal. Is a big group of clinics that has some around the world. Here is the link: http://www.maloclinics.com/pt/index.aspx

I hope you like it.

My schedules

Hey guys,

Imma start my 3rd year at the university this Tuesday. These two pictures are my schedules for this year. In my first semester there is 6 subjects that are:
  • Pediatric Dentistry (Odp B)
  • Endodontics
  • Orthodontic
  • Dysfunction of the masticatory System
  • Medical-surgical oral pathology
  • Prosthodontics

For my second semester I also have 6 subjects that are:
  • Introduction restorative clinic
  • Oral maxilofacial Medicine
  • Pediatric Dentistry 2
  • Orthodontics 2
  • Advanced periodontics
  • Prosthodontics 2

Obviously, I'm not going to be doing all of these hours. My group is the Group B or C2. So for example; on Mondays I'll have to be at the university from 8am to 9pm. Our schedules a like this because there are a lot of classes this year, which start dental practices at the clinic.

Mi calendar is this one:
My classes start Se`tember 6th; and I'll finish June 1rst.

For those you who will be beginning their first year in Dentistry or Medicine, I recommend you to study with the following book as shown below:

Psychotic disorders: Schizophrenia

The Psychotic disorders are very important in Dentistry. ¿Why is it so important? These kind of patients use to take antipsychotics such as Haloperidol, chlorpromazine, fluphenazine and another therapies. So we have to take care with the medical interactions and the behaviours that I'm about to talk.

They are characterized by a loss of contact with the reality. The patient use to see or believe things that don't match what they see the others.
The psychotic chronic disorder more representative is the Schizophrenia. A chronic disorder requires a minimum of six months to make this diagnosis. Today I want to talk about it.

The Schizophrenia has an unknown cause and the psychotic symptoms get impairs. There is just 1% of the population that is affected. The average age of onset is 25 years old.

There are examples in the film world; the shining and in shutter island. The first example is more aggressive and the second one is more paranoid. The last one is a real story about the mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr. life. that I recommend you to watch this three good movies if you want to learn more about Schizophrenia.

We have to divide the symptoms in positive and negative. The positive symptoms are:

  • Hallucination: hear voices talking, insulting or giving orders. There is also visual, tactile or olfactory hallucinations.
  • Delusions: incorrigible beliefs without a real base. They can be of greatness, nihilists, persecution, somatic...
  • Extravagant behaviour: repetitive, disorganized and aggressive behaviours.
  • Thoughts disorder: the level of thought guiding idea is lost, there is a breakdown of normal associations. Blocks can also affect the speech.

 The negative symptoms are:
  • Affective flattening: unchanging facial expressions with spontaneous movement, poor gesticulation, poor eye contact, sudden laughing or crying and monotone voice.
  • Alogia: lack of reasoning, extravagant answers an also invention of words.
  • Lethargy and apathy: neglect of hygiene, work or school, lack of energy and inability to enjoy things.
The schizophrenia involves 3 phases: the "shoots" with an initial prodomal phase, an active phase with symptoms and hallucinations and at the end a residual stage with negative symptoms.

Practice:

The main problem is that psychotic disorders are usually in the relationship with therapeutics; if the patient is unbalanced, may grow restless, suspicious or openly hostile, and even because something related to the delusions like a chip or microphone hidden in this mouth. Some of them aren't able to make decisions about their health. Antipsychotic drugs may produce orthostatic hypotension so we have to take care when they are getting up. In addition, most antipsychotics cause hypersalivation, dry mouth, which can worse the health of their mouth. That means that these patients will be more likely to have decays and periodontitis.

Nowadays we can control this disorder that's why we have to take care and ask about the medication. The most important thing is to treat everybody as a HUMAN, that's what we are. WE AREN'T JUST TEETH.

Soap teeth

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
Hello,
These pictures show my work from the 1rst grade. Each student had to make 3 teeth using soap and present it to the teacher. I decided to make a quarter of the mouth, with 8 teeth in total. Once finished, I used pink plasticine to imitate the gums.

Here we can see the canine on the right, then the 2 premolars, and finally the first molar on the left.
